Distances to each golf club-Overview:
Knowing the distances you reach with each golf club is vital to planning your trip to the golf course. Besides can take into account the right golf balls for your game. It is very important to know the distance you reach with each golf club. So, it is not the same to prepare the clubs to face a pitch. And putt course, then for a course of 18 pitches.
The golf rules allow the player to carry a maximum of 14 clubs. This has been the case since January 1938 when the USGA set that limit.
Ancient History-Distances to each golf club
And in 1939 The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews endorsed the rule. This makes knowing the distance count we perform with each club very important.
Typically, a set of clubs comprises 3 woods, 1 hybrid, 9 irons, and 1 putter. Although each player can take as long as they do not exceed 14. All clubs are very important, but choosing the golf putter is vital.
1.- Distances with each golf club
In the table below, you will see an example of the distances. With each golf club for what we would call a medium handicap player.
But in no case should it be your distances, they are only approximate distances. The distances with each golf club are something personal. Many factors depend on condition to each player such as the characteristics of the club used. They are atmospheric conditions, physical characteristics of the player, level of play,.
2.- Factors that influence the distance
Ready to hit the ball?
The stance is perfect, the swing movement is also perfect but… you haven’t reached the meters you always do with that club, what happened?
The simple answer is that the multiple factors that influence distance have caused you to lose a few precious meters. And end up in a bunker.
Reaching the usual distance that is achieved with a club is not something simple.
There are many factors that depend on things like the material used for the hit, the skill of the player. The most common that affect us two blows are:
2.1.- Atmospheric conditions.
It is perhaps the most obvious conditioner. If you play golf with a headwind or headwind, you will lose or gain meters.
It depends on the wind speed, a crosswind will also cut distances.
So, you can play golf in the rain or on a sunny day. The number of meters will be very different.
This factor is not usually taken into account. And it produces over one problem.
As we play in fields that have a lower altitude we find we obtain a smaller distance.
For example: In a field at sea level,
You reach the distance. But it will be less than that got playing on a field with a high altitude above sea level.
2.3.- Swing / Handicap.
Unless you are a professional player, countless times you will not perform the meters you had in mind.
A fluid and consistent swing is very difficult to achieve, therefore this factor is decisive in making homogeneous distances.
For this reason,
Sometimes with the same club you perform 80 meters. And in the next one you perform 130 meters. Therefore, take into account all parts of the swing to give consistency to your strokes / distances.
Therefore, at a lower handicap, the player has a more consistent hitting. And therefore will achieve the desired distances more frequently, but not always. Well, even professionals don’t always get it.
2.4.- Demographic factors.
It is another obvious conditioner. But I have seen many players frustrated. Because they do not get distance (which they consider being the correct distances). Without taking into account that what they want is a utopia.
Well, depending on the physical form (height, weight, muscle mass, etc.), age and sex, the striking distances are modified.
2.5.-Location of the ball / topography of the hole
To be successful in your shot and get the desired distance, assess the position where the ball lies. Because if it is in the rough (tall grass) you will lose a lot of distance in that shot.
Just as you have to be careful of the topography of the terrain. If the hole is downhill, the ball will roll. And you will surely be able to make a greater distance.
2.6.- Golf equipment
Last but not least, we find the distance improvement. that use of one type of material and another can offer us.
Many players of a certain level resort to rods and heads of different alloys, forgings, etc. in order to gain meters.
What usually requires a very high financial outlay and does not mean any improvement to me. Because I am not at such a high level as to notice a significant change by investing more in material.
But I understand that there are people with low handicaps. If they make use of the excellent last batch material , that improves distance (clubs, balls, etc.)
3.- Calculating your distances with each stick
There are many ways to know the distances. You make with each of the clubs. Then you have in your bag. The simplest and most accurate requires that you have a golf laser distance meter (golf rangefinder).
The method is very simple. In the practice field, start hitting balls with every one club. Starting with the wedge with the highest loft (degrees) to finish with the driver or wood 1.
Hit about 10 or 15 balls with each stick. And write the distance got in each hit with each stick. With the help of the laser meter it will be very easy to get the exact distance of each hit.
With these data, you can make the average distance. You get with each suit. And it will help you improve your playing cards, as you will have a precious data in your possession.
The most advisable thing is that you measure distances in two different ways. One of them performs half a swing in the hits. And the other performs a full swing, with this you can take two measurements for each club.
And you will expand the possibilities of executing distances practically the same with different suits.
If you don’t have time to do this task, on The Golf Mentor site they have a free calculator to show. With greater or lesser success, the distance you take with each club.
To do this, you only need to show the proper distance you make with one of them.
You know that with the 7 iron. Then you do 150 meters because just by entering that data. You generate a table with the estimate for the most common clubs.
It is not the most reliable. But a quick way to have an approximation of the distances with each golf club you would make.
Don’t have a laser meter? No problem. The fields have flags and distance indicators along the width of the practice area. They will help you to estimate the distances got with each of the clubs.
But the measurement will be much less accurate than if it were. You do with a golf laser distance meter.
You should not be obsessed with having very long distances.Soit is a very common mistake to be obsessed with it.
Nor do you get frustrated if you sometimes hit 20 meters longer or 20 meters shorter with the same club. Which leads you to distrust that club and not use it again.
The best advice has constant distances. With each of the clubs in your bag begins with having a good swing, balanced, uniform. And to which you always apply the same rhythm.
This is achieved mainly with practice and with the help of an excellent teacher.
Therefore, invest in classes and practice to reach that swing that always leads. You can achieve the same distances with the same club.
And of course, you will not be a better player. So you hit longer and worse if your distances are shorter. In golf the distance is important but precision is more relevant so if you are regular / precise with your strokes.
You will far exceed to that friend who takes you 40 meters with the driver . And then has no precision for the rest of the game.
An example is this video of Jon Rahm who achieves 275 meters hitting the ball with a 4 iron.
Something that is not within my reach and that will never be.
To clarify again that the distances in the table above are merely informative. It is likely that they correspond to your current distances.
But it is also likely that as soon as you practice regularly and have very good physical conditions. You will be well above the distances of said table.
I challenge you to hit the ball. Similarly to the participants of the World Long Drive 2018, where these players have truly crazy club speeds. And the distances they achieve (over 360 meters). We all like it. To a greater or lesser extent, to do many meters with the driver and that the line is excellent. But at least I am not even close to these professionals.
