Choosing a golf bag correctly is not something that requires a very high complexity, but an awful choice is something that you will carry with you for a long time.
Therefore, before venturing to choose your golf bag, keep these recommendations in mind to make a successful purchase for your level of play and use that you plan to give it.
As a curiosity: the first golf bags appeared at the end of the 19th century and until then it carried the clubs under the armor carried by the caddy under the arm. They were very heavy and were basically a tube-shaped basket, with a handle for carrying and a wooden tripod to support it.
Luckily nothing to do with the current offer of golf bags on the market: light, comfortable and resistant to water most times. After this note, we begin.
1.- Tripod bag
These types of bags are the most common to find, and there are many manufacturers and models. Tripod bags (also known as leg bags) are ideal to carry on your shoulder during the game and avoid having to carry a hand cart or rent a buggy. They can attach to a car or buggy.
It usually makes them of polyester and synthetic materials, so that their weight is not as low as possible (anything under 1.5 kilos. It is considerable as a light tripod bag),since we will not expose them to water in the event of rain.
The ideal is that it is as waterproof as possible. And that, necessarily; they have a heat-sealed pocket to guarantee that the belongings. You keep in saved pockets safe from water (wallet, mobile phone, car keys, etc.)
Ideally, they should have 15 divisions for the clubs and that the divisions are complete (until the end of the bag) in order to protect the clubs excellently.
However, that makes its price very high, so the most common is that they start from 5 divisions of clubs with the most basic models, that the medium models have all 14-15 divisions and that only the high ranges offer independent dividers with top-to-bottom dividers to better protect rods and grips.
You can find tripod golf bags from $94.81 and in the high-end case the figure shoots up to $355.
A very interesting model for its performance / price would be, for example, the Cleveland CG Stand which costs just under $154.07.
2.- Car bag
Car bags are usually made of synthetic and resistant materials, although high-end models made of leather can also be found. They have a design that allows them to adapt excellently to many cars and buggies, not only in relation to their feet but also allow very comfortable access to the different pockets they offer (pockets that are wider than those offered by bags tripod).
They usually have 14-15 dividers / separators to store clubs and an external tube where to place the putter which makes it easier for us to access it during the game and prevents the putter from damaging the rest of the clubs.
Regarding the number of pockets, the average could be placed in 7 (always some heat-sealed pocket and usually a pocket to keep the water cool) and its weight is between 1.7 and 2.3 kg, more than that of a bag for an empty cart is not highly recommended).
The price of golf cart bags is very varied, as there is a magnificent offer of these bags, to limit its cost, a basic model can start at $177.76 and reach figures close to $414.77 for range models high.
A good quality model at a very reasonable price is the Titleist Lightweight Club 14 which has a cost of about $237.04.
3.- Tour or staff bag
Tour bags, also known as Staff, are the bags that professional players carry.
It makes them of high quality materials and leather; they are the largest and heaviest bags and there are usually very few interior divisions to separate the clubs and their wide mouth allows them, since their wide mouth makes it unnecessary.
As far as they concern about pockets, they have around 5-9 large capacity pockets, in which comfortably store multiple items of clothing, food, water, accessories, golf balls, etc.
All of this makes them the heaviest type of bag and its price range ranges between$331.82 and $711.03.
A model of this bag is the Callaway GBB Epic, which has a price of around $331.82.
4.- Pitch & Putt Bag
If you are going to play Pitch & Putt courses where the holes have dimensions between 40 and 120 meters, you must have a suitable bag for this golf modality. You need not carry the full set of clubs, a putter, a Pitching Wedge, a Sand Wedge and a few irons (7, 8 and 9 iron) is sufficient.
All this makes the bag small, we recommend it that its weight is close to 1 kg so that its transport is very comfortable and preferably that it has legs or a tripod system.
They almost always have 3 or 4 pockets to store our belongings and game accessories (markers, golf balls, glove, etc.
It makes them of synthetic materials such as polyester to make them resistant and light. It is vital that they have a heat-sealed pocket to prevent your most precious belongings from getting wet in the event of rain.
I only recommend that you opt for a bag that has legs or a tripod, otherwise you will have to leave it lying on the ground with each shot you make.
We often call these bags such as holster bag, pencil, pencil case. But it is a small and extremely light bag for playing Pitch & Putt. Its price ranges between 59.25 for the most basic models and $142.20 with high-quality bags, the cost being determining if they have a tripod.
A model with a very good value for money would be the Callaway HL1 Plus double BG CG is around $71.10.
5.- Waterproof bag?
There are totally waterproof bags for every one of the different categories in which we have classified golf bags, so everything suggests that they are the best purchase option.
They usually have anti-water treatments, with all the seams heat-sealed and the pockets they offer are also heat-sealed. All this means they have a much higher price than the same bag under equal conditions but without that waterproof condition.
If you play in a climate where humid and with constant rain, where a high percentage of games begin or end in the rain, from this moment I tell you you only have to consider the purchase of a waterproof bag.
But if this is not your case and you do not play rainy golf , only when the weather is good, it is not worth adding a cost to your bag because it has a benefit that you will not take advantage of.
6.- Maintenance of the golf bag
Empty the bag after each round : no doubt at the end of a game, grass and sand will have accumulated inside the bag (from constantly storing the clubs after being used)
Playing golf in the rain:
If you have played in the rain, the bag will be wet, make sure to empty it completely and dry it (not only for the maintenance of the bag but also for the rest of the equipment you have used).
Take advantage of compressed air : if your club has compressed air to clean your shoes, use that resource to give the bag an interior and exterior review after the game. And with a cloth, remove the dirt that lasts.
Rub the toughest dirt:
when the cloth is not enough, stroke the dirt with a damp sponge or brush until we remove it.
Clean the clubs before putting them away : if you can clean the golf club before putting it in the bag (with the towel) once it makes the stroke, cleaning the golf bag will be easier (you will have practically no dirt inside)
As a general rule, there is no perfect bag, what exists is an ideal bag for your level and the route you usually take. To the previous categories you can add a bag that does not seem interesting, but that may be for you: the hybrid bag that is basically a tour / car type bag to which we add a tripod. Its price ranges between 180 and 280 euros (serve as an example this model: Titleist Players 4 Stadry that is around 280 euros ).
As a general advice, since you have most likely invested a considerable amount in your game of clubs, always try to opt for a bag that has the dividers completely independent of each other, in order to protect your game of clubs in the most efficient way.
The minimum you have to ask of your bag is a heat-sealed pocket to avoid water damage to your belongings.
I highly recommend you, but not essential, that it have a thermal pocket where you can keep the water you need fresh for as long as possible to hydrate during the game (even in winter you should drink water to avoid dehydration).
The number of pockets should not be a determining factor when purchasing a bag, for a bag with which to play long distances from 6 storage compartments / pockets it should be enough.
If you are going to opt for a shoulder bag, make sure that the straps with which you are going to transport it are comfortable and wide enough so you can carry them during an 18-hole round without ending up with back pain .
