How to plan a golf hole?

How to plan a golf hole-Overview:

Planning how to play each hole of golf is not something trivial, it largely depends on whether we go home with a triple digit card (over 100 strokes) or with a double digit card (less than 100 strokes). Always talking about an amateur with a medium handicap, as is my case how to plan a golf hole.

That is why he plans every one hole. It will not take more than a few seconds and it will improve your results without the slightest doubt. Instinctively we only look at a couple of aspects:

What part is the hole?

And if it is a par 5, we take the drive and we only think about doing meters. Likewise, we look a bit if there are any obstacles we can fall into and if there is wind… after them we hit the ball hard.

Well, that way of planning a hole is not the most appropriate if you want to improve your handicap and play. For this reason, always keep these aspects in mind before teeing off at any hole.

1.- Planning the hole

This is the order that I use, but the first three points do not always have to be done in that order, you can choose the order that is most comfortable for you according to your level.

1.1.- Par for the hole and distance to flag:

This data only serves to know the meters are at the flag, in no case to show directly the iron / wood to use in the start, look at the following aspects before deciding… to get the pair.

1.2.- The wind:

It is for or against, lopsided, force of it or not even a blade of air flows. According to this, you already know that you have to hit and choose one club or another.

1.3.- Obstacles and out of bounds-how to plan a golf hole:

It is obvious, but in what place and distance are the obstacles (water, bunkers, etc…) without forgetting the different out of bounds that may exist.

1.4.- Shots and distances:

Having the three previous points clear, now is the time to plan the hole.

So think about where you want to leave the ball on each stroke (it is not about doing too many meters.

It is about always going down the fairway) until leave an approach at a comfortable distance to hole in your first kick.

Doing a lot of meters in each hit is satisfactory (I will not deny that), but it also means “squeezing the sticks much more” and hitting bad shots that make us fall into obstacles, get off the street or go out of bounds. It will show you a golf hole.

1.5.- Be honest with yourself:

You know very well how many meters you usually get with each club, so be honest with yourself when planning each shot and especially the tee shot.

For example-how to plan a golf hole:

If with the driver you usually do between 185 and 195 meters, do not go out with him to overcome the bunker you have at 200 meters, surely you think: “I press the stick a little more” so he overcame the bunker, and the ball runs another good number of meters.

When the reality will most likely be different: in the best of cases you will fall into the bunker.

If you have been able to make a straight hit, or you will go to the tall grass. Another possibility is that you take it out of bounds or fall into a water hazard (especially placed for brave people like you).

The best thing is to take a wood or iron that allows you to make a respectful distance without that distance making you reach the bunker and plan your second shot once there.

2.- Do you play golf like a hero?

Golf her0

In over one tournament I have met hero players, golf heroes, brave heroes and above all daring. Of those heroes who hit the drive with all their soul to reach 250 meters when they hardly exceed 200 meters.

And end up out of bounds; heroes of those who have the ball behind some leafy trees. They try to hit it hard between the branches (but hitting a branch or trunk and instead of gaining meters, losing meters to the flag).

When the best thing was to have sought to return to the street; heroes who do not take penalty in situations.

Where it is unavoidable and ends the hole with a quintuple bogey or worse… I don’t think more examples are necessary, right?

Hole

We have all been hero players, and we have complicated our lives on a hole.

It is something that is intrinsically linked to our human nature. But playing 18 holes in a row in hero mode makes little sense.

On the various occasions that, in a tournament, I have played with a hero 100% of the time.

The hero has withdrawn from the competition, either claiming that nothing came out and that he was desperate or claiming an injury. So no I recommend doing heroics.

If you do not want to leave the golf course unhinged not taking into account that you will have wasted the cost of the tournament registration.

If you are impulsive, hot-blooded or whatever you want to call it.

Recommendation

I recommend that you play a game in your usual club in hero mode (taking the maximum distance from all your clubs, trying impossible approaches and being very aggressive in each shot) and keep that card.

After this hero game, try to play a round with your head, planning the holes.

In advance and realistically at your level of play, risking when you have a high probability of achieving your goal.

And your card will surely have much fewer hits than when you have played in “hero” mode.

After that, surely, you will play with more head and plan your holes better, with which you will improve your cards as soon as you consider it (and lower your handicap with a little dedication).

3.- General advice to plan the holes

Take your time to think and coolly plan the hole based on the previous advice and always take the club that offers you the most confidence at the exit (don’t just think about making meters).

Visit the website of the club where you are going to play and check the description of the course, holes and peculiarities of the course…

Surely a score card will be available where you can see the distances and handicap of the holes.

If not, you can call the caddy master or “visit the course” from google maps to see the placement of the bunkers and water hazards.

If possible, control over the ball and the place from which we want to make the next shot must always prevail, over getting a few more meters of distance.

All the decisions you make have to be made by you and only you, your teammates do not play as you do.

Taking Decession

So do not imitate their decisions… make your own decisions (correct or not) to take your game to the next level. How to plan a golf hole.
